Oprah Winfrey, one of the world’s most influential people and the world’s best interviewer says,
“I realized that the only way to create long-term improvement and empowerment, and literally change the trajectory of somebody’s life, is through education.”
‘ The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls’ is a boarding school in South Africa that Winfrey opened ten years ago. She invested $40 million in the school. The school’s mission is to educate, empower, nurture and inspire girls to become world leaders. Winfrey’s idea came about when she was a houseguest of Nelson Mandela. They agreed that education was a way to end poverty in South Africa. Through the ‘ Oprah Winfrey Leadership Foundation,´ and as of 2017, the sixth class of OWLAG will have entered university with the help of her foundation.
Winfrey has given away about $400 million to educational causes. She gave over 400 scholarships to Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. She has also given at least $10 million to A Better Chance.org whose mission is to improve access to quality education for students of color. Historically, 96 percent of graduates of ‘ A Better Chance’ programs enroll in college.
Furthermore, Ms. Winfrey has given $1 million or more to at least nine different charter school organizations in a number of different areas throughout the country.
Oprah Winfrey’s ‘Angel Network’ raised over $80,000,000 for charity projects and non-profit organizations around the world. Oprah personally covered all administrative costs associated with the charity, so that 100% of the proceedings could go to charity programs. Winfrey donated $12 million to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African-American History and Culture. Winfrey raised over $11 million for relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina and personally gave $10 million to the fund.
On her talk show ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show ,’ which aired for 24 seasons, she motivated her more than 22 million viewers to do altruistic acts of charity, and is considered to be a spiritual leader. In 2003, she showed anti-war footage that no other media would show. In one episode of her show, she was in South Africa, where she brought attention to children affected by poverty and AIDS; over $7 million was donated by viewers around the world to ‘Oprah’s Angel Network’ for poor and AIDS affected children in Africa.
Winfrey used her talk show to uncover horrible cruelty instilled on animals in some puppy mills and factory farms. In 2008, Winfrey was named PETA ’s ‘ Person of the Year ’ for her efforts to help the less fortunate, including animals.
In 2013 President Barack Obama awarded Winfrey with the ‘ Presidential Medal of Freedom .’
