Leonardo DiCaprio: Environmentalist and Philanthropist

Re:Wild  together with Leonardo DiCaprio are committed to the long-term health and wellbeing of all Earth’s inhabitants. Through their partnerships, the foundation supports pioneering projects that protect vulnerable wildlife from extinction, while restoring balance to threatened ecosystems and communities. The foundation focuses on six areas: Wildland Conservation, Climate Change, Indigenous Rights, Marine Conservation, Innovative Solutions and Public Advocacy. His foundation has awarded more than $61 million in grants and supports more than 65 organizations.

Mr DiCaprio supports many organizations which are dedicated to the survival of our animals, among them, the World Wildlife Fund whose mission is to save wildlife and the living planet.  The WWF uses its expertise to stop wildlife crime by invoking high level government action to influence and expand funding for wildlife conservation. In the ‘Netflix‘ documentary, ‘The Ivory Game’ executive produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, the filmmakers went undercover to infiltrate the global illegal trafficking of ivory.

“Traders in ivory actually want extinction of elephants. The less elephants there are, the more the price rises, says a man interviewed in the documentary.

Here’s an interesting fact, Ms. Darcy readers: Elephants are led by a matriarch; the oldest and often largest female is the matriarch of the entire herd; she may lead anywhere from eight to 100 elephants. Furthermore, a female elephant never abandons her children.

You can adopt an elephant on the WWF.org webpage and support the WWF efforts.  World Wildlife Fund Save the Elephant with a Gift.

The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation and WWF campaign, ‘Save Tigers Now,’ is a global campaign aimed at building political, financial and public support to double the amount of tigers on our planet by 2022, next year of the tiger.

DiCaprio dedicated his ‘Academy Awards’ acceptance speech to climate change:

Climate change is real, and it’s happening right now,” he said. “It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species, and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating. We need to support leaders around the world who do not speak for the big polluters or the big corporations, but who speak for all of humanity, for the indigenous people of the worldand for those people out there whose voices have been drowned out by the politics of greed.”

Appian Way Productions founded by Leonardo DiCaprio has produced and narrated documentaries on climate change, ´The 11th Hour´ about global warming and ´Before the Flood´ about Climate change. Before the Flood can be seen in its entirety and for free on YouTube.

Pope Francis, Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Elon Musk, and John Kerry are all featured in DiCaprio’s film, ‘Before the Flood.’ In the film, Pope Francis speaks out on climate change and calls for “a broad cultural revolution.” The Pope calls upon Catholics to have an “ecological conversion,” telling them to confess sins against creation, such as using “plastic and paper,”

Mr DiCaprio has also produced ‘Cowspiracy.´ The film is about the effects of animal agriculture on the environment.

In 2014, The United Nations designated DiCaprio as a “U.N. Messenger of Peace.” He made an opening statement to the members of the UN Climate Summit, and spoke again before the signing of the ´Paris Climate Change Agreement.´

While there is certainly no lack of information when it comes to wildlife preservation and climate change, the U.S. government and governments all over the world need to more actively engage and tackle the tremendous problems our planet is facing; specifically, the extinction of animal species and global warming. Our politicians need to pass stricter legislation and work with, and fund more organizations, that defend our wildlife and planet.

It is my belief that as citizens, we can save animals in extinction and our planet by voting for people in government who love animals and nature, and have a strong desire to make a commitment to save our planet.

So, President Trump, what about the preservation of our nation?
