We are living in country where the president is taking away healthcare for women, and imposing new legislation which adversely affects women all over the world. It does not make any sense for women to suffer from this injustice. What if a women president were to take away prostate examinations for men? Would this not be hugely contested by all men?
I believe and am hopeful, that social justice for women will come about with political change. Our laws are written by politicians, so it is safe to say that if we vote for an honest, decent and competent candidate for president, we would not be in danger of any wild executive orders being signed.
As things stand now in this country, we have a president who is putting our planet in grave danger with the orders he has already signed in just his first few months of office.
Just think of the calamitous effects of climate change due to Trump’s pulling out of the Paris Climate Accord, his executive order curbing government regulations on greenhouse pollution, which nullify Obama’s climate change efforts, his executive order to expand drilling off America’s coasts, and includes drilling on land that is sacred to Native Americans, not to mention the effects of a nuclear standoff with North Korea.
In April, Trump signed legislation cutting off federal funding to Planned Parenthood. His measure invalidates a rule completed by the Obama administration, which impeded state and local governments from withholding federal funding for family planning services related to contraception, sexually transmitted infections, fertility, pregnancy care, and breast and cervical – cancer screening from qualified health providers, regardless of whether they also performed abortions. This new signed legislation was cleared in congress with Vice-President Pence casting the tie-breaking vote.
Even though half of Planned Parenthood affiliates do not perform abortions, Republicans in congress and legislatures around the country, have penalized the organization.
Trump signed a rule reinstating the global gag rule imposed by Republican presidents since Reagan, which blocks United States funding from going to any non-governmental organization around the world that provides abortion counseling, even if the money is not used for abortion-related services. From the article in ‘ Forbes ’ ‘Trump’s ‘Global Gag Rule’ On Abortion Hurts All Women’ by Judy Stone, this rule, “ …prohibits any involvement with abortion in order for an NGO (non-governmental organization) to receive funding from the U.S. for family planning.” This means that an organization can’t even use its own money —not only in providing abortions, but for a physician counseling his/her patient as to the best care for her, or referring a
patient to another place for that necessary medical care. It means that patients won’t have condoms to reduce HIV transmission.” This rule punishes women all over the world because it affects global health funding. Check out the article: Forbes Judy Stone ‘Trump Hell-bent on Punishing Women.’
One can have an idealistic idea of America and what it stands for, but another thing is the reality we live in, where the reactionary ideas of a large portion of the population have helped Trump gain the office of the presidency.
As a person who has lived in Europe for many years, my
identity as an American became stronger. I appreciate the idea of America, which for me, means that this country is continuously becoming a better version of itself. Our forward thinking belief in power-sharing of political opponents, is the core strength of our Democracy. Has the Republican party forgotten about the core values of our country?
To have elevated a man who has no respect for democratic norms or institutions, total contempt for normal standards of behaviour and fellow citizens, critics and opponents, it is beyond my comprehension as to why anyone would have voted for Trump, or continue to support Trump.
