The Preservation of our Nation
On September 15, 2017 by msdarcyonlineClimate change, nuclear war, biological warfare, and whether or not the U.S. wants to lead this world, are current issues that come to mind when I think about the preservation of our nation.
Having lost the election to Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton has put our country into a delicate position. President Trump at the helm of our nation is not a reassuring fact at all. And considering the damage he has already done in just eight short months; pulling out of the Paris Climate Accord, playing into the hands of Kim Jong Un and North Korea; his efforts to repeal Obama Care; his grudging denouncement of the White Supremacists in Charlottesville; advocacy of birtherism; lack of support for our transgender troops; and his contempt for working class Americans, Trump has led the country into disarray.
I believe that Clinton’s failure to win the election was due in part to her shortcomings as a candidate. She lost a portion of the public’s trust. Foreign countries´ contributions to the Clinton Foundation and their possible influence on her political actions; her cashing in on the Wall Street speeches; and her State Department emails on a private server, were some of the issues which undermined her credibility and lowered her approval ratings.
However, I believe that the Russian meddling with the election process and the negative media coverage Clinton received as a candidate -running for a position traditionally held by a man in our country, were the main reasons for having lost the election. The media reaction to her candidacy was unconventional and misogynistic; her choices of wardrobe, hairdo and shoes were highly scrutinized; whereas, those of her male counterparts were not; the antipathy of white men and their fear of a women becoming the most powerful woman in the free world, were all signs that there is a large majority of Americans who believe that traditional gender roles should not change; therefore a woman president could never be a legitimate one. There was even a large percentage of white women who voted for Trump, and it is a well-known fact that he has demeaned women, so why would they vote against their own-self interest? Openly voting for a sexist, racist man, is the equivalent of being complicit to one’s own oppression. What this tells us is that misogyny is not only attributed to men.
The Russian meddling into the election was not meant to make Americans lose faith in the system, rather it was done to sway people´s opinions and encourage them to vote for Trump. The Russian hacking of the DNC computers, Clinton Campaign Manager Podesta´s hacked emails, Donald Trump Jr´s email about information which could incriminate Clinton, the Russian cyber-attack on the State Department connected to Clinton´s server when she was Secretary of State, the Wikileaks publishing of Clinton´s emails, was all conducted to hurt Clinton during the Presidential election.
When Angela Merkel said that Germany was prepared to act alone, and that she sees a brighter future with China than with the U.S., you know we are in big trouble, and that our leader has made the U.S. lose credibility with other nations.
Our civilization requires leadership. Our democracy, Rule of Law, (and Trump should not be allowed to influence or dismiss independent council), institutions, citizens, voting system, and immigration laws, all must be defended.
I am still recovering from Hillary´s loss, and on a good day, I can imagine what it would be like if she were in the White House today. We can only look towards the next election for hope, and to our constitution which, with its three branches of power, sets limits to the power Trump has.
As Baron de Montesquieu said in 1748:
“Experience teaches that every human being who has the power tends to abuse it. Therefore, it is necessary that the power sets limits to the power. There are three things in every state authority: the legislature, the executive and the judiciary. There is no freedom, if they are not separated from each other.”
