Francesca Comencini says, “…Women are the Nation.”
In an article in ‘ The New Yorker’ in the section ‘The Women,’ there is an interesting piece by Ariel Levy about Italian film director and political organizer Francesca Comencini. Comencini and her sister Cristina, organized a feminist demonstration against Italy’s ex Prime Minister Berlusconi.
Comencini says Berlusconi and Trump resemble each other in several ways: large fortunes from real estate, extreme tans, a liking for authoritarian leaders, and to quote Levy, “a murky grasp on the concept of consent.” Berlusconi once said, ¨We don´t have enough soldiers to stop rape because our women are so beautiful!¨
Trump’s record when it comes to offensive comments is so appalling, but here are just a few: He once tweeted about sexual assault in the military, “26,000 unreported sexual assults (sic) in the military-only 238 convictions. What did these geniuses expect when they put men & women together?” Or his comments in the video where he talks about “grabbing women by the pussy” and stated that “when you’re a star, they let you do it.” He tweeted about Hillary Clinton not satisfying her husband, joked about dating his daughter Ivanka, suggested that women should be ¨punished¨ for having abortions, called women ¨beautiful pieces of ass,¨ and insulted Rosie O´Donnell, Carly Fiorina, Heidi Klum, amongst many other women, compared women to buildings, and many more derogatory, sexist comments. You can find them all in the article inthe British newspaper ´The Telegraph,’ titled ´Donald Trump Sexism Tracker’.
These comments show Trumps disposition to act in certain ways, they are a reflection of his feelings and actions. Just by going on virtue of character, he appears to be an extreme and excessive personality. He doesn’t appear to have honest motives, do anything at the right time, nor do anything to the right extent. No wonder woman all over the world were concerned when he was elected.
In the article, Comencini expresses her dismay at waking up to the news that the next President of the United States would be Donald Trump. She says, “we all felt this American loss as a personal loss, as women.” She continued, “but we must not allow this feeling to grow inside us. It’s in the strength of women that this type of leader can find resistance.” She also hopes that Trump’s downfall will be similar to Berlusconi’s. After Comencini’s demonstration with more than a million people who marched all over Italy in protest of Berlusconi and his misogyny, the Italian prime minister resigned nine months later.
“Do not make something against him, but communicate the idea that women are the nation,” Cristina said. Francesca advises women not to “…feel as if you have lost,” “ …walk like a winner….and one day it will be true.”
