Letter to Mr Trump, ‘Make Peace not War.’
On September 5, 2017 by msdarcyonlineMr President,
It could be a tremendous success for you and your administration if you engaged in talks with North Korea. I urge you to change your alarmingly hostile rhetoric and to use diplomacy to try and solve the grave threat of nuclear war that our country and the world could be facing.
It is unprecedented that a president of the United States would threaten a country with nuclear capability with “fire and fury like never seen before.” How could you risk the lives of American people on the mainland, Guam, and those of our allies in South Korean and Japan, who in such close proximity to the North, would be the hardest hit?
Ambassador Nikki Haley said that North Korea is “begging for war,” but I cannot believe this, or that the North would risk “partial annihilation,” as General Mattis stated. Are you looking for an excuse to push the world towards WWIII? A nuclear attack on North Korea will cause military intervention from other countries, result in millions of casualties, and cause a devastating impact on the world climate.
Such rhetoric is counterproductive to getting to the table with N Korea, and only worsens the highly explosive situation the entire planet could be facing.
Vladimir Putin has warned that the world faces a “global catastrophe” over North Korea. He says sanctions are useless, and that the North Koreans prefer to eat grass before they give up their nuclear program.
I agree with this, and implore you to engage in talks with North Korea. At this crucial time of heated exchanges between the two countries, it is imperative that there be no pre-conditions, or risk failure to get the other side to the negotiating table.
By cutting the State Department budget, you are telling the world that the organization has very little importance to you. You depend almost entirely on family members to do everything when it comes to foreign policy, this is unheard of in developed countries. Top level leadership roles are unfilled and half of key State posts have been filled by temporary acting officials. We do not have a deputy secretary of state, or any undersecretaries, which, for an organization that relies heavily on the guidance of its hierarchy, sends the message that we cannot execute policy with quality, nor do we follow diplomatic protocol. Where is Rex Tillerson in all of this, and what is his vision for our country? You appointed a man who has no prior diplomatic or political experience, so how can other countries have any confidence in our leadership?
It is a huge error to consider the State Department to be a less valuable tool on the geopolitical level!
Mr President, your message to the world is clear, in your mind diplomacy is not important, only threats of war and annihilation are your tools. You have no vision of America, or its place in this world. But it is never too late to change, and you could impede a war.
I have always thought that the current leader of North Korea Kim Jong-un was an unstable personality, but you have not shown the world any restraint either. Your mishandling of this problem could very well lead to a miscalculation, which is how wars have gotten started throughout history.
North Korea has nuclear capability, as any country in the world could have, and their technology is developing at an incredibly fast pace. Suffice to say that you should engage in talks with the North in an effort to gain peace and not war.
World peace and nuclear disarmament should be priority for leaders all over the world. The elimination of nuclear weapons should be a leading global policy issue for the media all over the world. Nuclear arsenals only drive insecurity and the need for more weapons. The resources that go into weapons should be given to the people to keep them healthy and secure, and could provide much needed opportunities.
Your truly,
