Adolfo Dominguez: Spanish Designer of Sustainable Fashion

“Wrinkles are beautiful,” says Adolfo Dominguez in reference to his use of linen in all of his clothing lines.

Spanish designer Adolfo Dominguez  (Galicia, Spain) makes beautiful clothes, his vision is one of quality and elegance.  Remember the “Miami Vice” days with Don Johnson?  Those impeccable linen suits worn by the show’s protagonists were made by Adolfo Dominguez.  Linen is one of the most sustainable fabrics because when untreated, it is biodegradable.  Adolfo Dominguez  is a truly modern designer because he is a responsible manufacturer.  When he is making his collections he analyzes the carbon footprint of his production and makes decisions based on that.  He believes consumers should be thinking of the carbon footprint we are making on our planet and protect our environment. He says that the use of chemicals for the production of colors in the textile industry should be sustainable, otherwise he says, “don’t use chemicals!”

“We dress to be loved,” and “Don’t follow trends, make it fit on you.”

Dominguez says everybody wants to be loved and we dress ourselves because clothes are a second skin.  He believes clothes should make us feel confident. His clothes are comfortable and materials are natural and loose.  His jackets and coats made from Peruvian alpaca are truly luxurious, soft and unique.  He has two lines for women: AD Woman and U Woman, which is his sporty line. He also has two lines for men, plus accessories, vegan and eco-leather handbags and shoes for both women and men.

I find that many of his designs are inspired by Japanese culture, so not all of his clothes are purely classic European.  His clothes are impeccably made and reasonably priced for the design and quality.  I love that some of his designs have a handcrafted bohemian look to them.

Dominguez’s designs seem to be representative of his love of art and poetry, but he says what inspires him the most are people, who, like artists, make dressing poetry.  He studied design and cinema in Paris, then went on to work in his father’s fashion studio in Galicia in the 1970’s.  In 1981 he showed his first collection in Madrid.

Adolfo Dominguez perfume ‘Agua de Rosas’ is a fantastic fragrance that I have worn for years.  His fragrance ‘Bambu’ is inspired by eastern elements and spices.  Currently, he has over 500 points of sale in 30 countries all over the world.  He has one store in Miami, Florida, but his clothes and fragrances can be bought in the U.S. from his online store.
